Technology In the Classroom

Technology Education

In our Upper Elementary media literacy class, students do more than decode headlines—they become thoughtful consumers and creators of media. They ask big questions: Who made this? Why? What’s missing? From TikToks to news clips, our students learn to spot bias, recognize reliable sources, and understand the impact of digital storytelling.

They’re not just watching—they’re wondering, analyzing, and responding with growing confidence.

At Schechter, we believe real learning means knowing how to think, not what to think. Media literacy is one more way we help students grow their voice—and use it with care.

Cell Phone Policy

Electronic devices may not be used in school buildings during school hours unless they are being used for educational purposes.

  • Students in Grades 4-8 may use cell phones or electronics before school until Homeroom begins. Cell phones are collected each morning before students proceed to homeroom and returned at the end of the school day during dismissal.

  • Smartwatches are not permitted. Exceptions will be made for students who use smart devices for medical purposes. Each family with children in Grades 4-8 will be asked to sign a form agreeing to our policies for the acceptable use of technology.

  • Cell phones or smart devices are not permitted for students in Pre-Kindergarten-Grade 3. We encourage families to sign the “Wait Until 8th” pledge which empowers parents to rally together to delay giving children a smartphone until at least the end of 8th grade.
